What is Balayage?

It is only one of the hottest hair color trends right now! The origin of the word balayage is French and it means “to sweep.” Balayage highlights are swept or painted in small sections to the surface of the hair creating a graduated, natural-looking effect. The final look is softer and appears more more youthful. It has the appearance of hair that has been kissed by the sun.

What sets it apart?

It is a free hand technique with results that look much less “uniform” than other hair coloring techniques. The technique gives the colorist more control to place the color where it can highlight your unique facial features and complement your skin tone. It also allows the colorist to specifically target gray strands.

Why is it so popular?

One reason it is so popular among A-listers is because the multi-dimensional color can give depth to blondes, red heads and brunettes. It is also super low maintenance. The growth line is not as prominent, helping your roots to blend in and allowing you to look chic for longer between appointments. The highlights can grow out beautifully and naturally.

What else do I need to know?

Depending on the specific look you are trying to achieve, balayage highlights can take more than one visit to build the color to your desired results. Be sure to let the receptionist know you specifically want balayage color when you book your appointment. The technique can be a bit more time consuming and you want your stylist to put aside the proper amount of time. As with other hair coloring techniques, your hair needs to be in good condition for the color to look its best. After care with salon quality products that match the texture and needs of your hair will keep your highlights looking gorgeous for longer.
